The 25-year-old joined Matsatsantsa, now officially sold and renamed Siwelele FC pending approval from the Premier Soccer League executive committee, at the start of last season and was a regular.
But following the uncertainty of the club sale as well as doubts over the future of players whose contracts ended on 30 June, it was likely that a few key stars would be leaving SuperSport.
Poggenpoel has now held talks with City and finalised personal terms to reunite with coach Gavin Hunt, who was appointed by the KwaZulu-Natal outfit early last week as reported by the public broadcaster.
The former Chippa United midfielder featured in 22 matches from all competitions for SuperSport – first under Hunt prior to the experienced mentor being sacked due to a string of poor results and then later Andre Arendse.
With Hunt’ guidance alongside new technical director Ernst Middendorp, it’s further understood that City are concluding deals with goalkeeper Darren Keet and Thulani Hlatshwayo, the duo who are also free agents.
Keet announced his exit from Cape Town City two weeks ago, while Hlatshwayo has not been offered a new deal by the Siwelele FC owners.
Poggenpoel is one of several signings set to be unveiled by the recently promoted side Durban City in the build-up to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign that kicks off next month.
Hunt took over from Simo Dladla, who has since joined AmaZulu as the assistant coach to Arthur Zwane.
