Steve Komphela dissects CAF CL first leg ahead of Cairo trip

The Brazilians conceded during referee’s optional time to allow the visitors to sneak in a crucial away goal, which now makes them favourites.

Sundowns had taken the lead through Lucas Ribeiro, which looked set to be the winning goal until Walid El Katri grabbed the equaliser 10 seconds before the final whistle was blown in Tshwane.

Komphela says they are confident they can turn things around.

"We are in the final of the CAF Champions League, and as we all know, it's important not to concede a goal at home, but now that that has happened, we cannot regret and we have to look forward to the second leg, with the intention of scoring goals," said Komphela.

Loftus went silent when Pyramids levelled matters just as Sundowns fans were ready to celebrate having one hand on the new trophy.

Komphela admits they have no choice but to go all-out attack in Egypt.

"It will deflate you, but remember that champions are born out of such tragedies, you just have to show resilience, mental strength, and the appetite to attack," highlighted the seasoned coach. 

Having watched Pyramids in the build-up to the Champions League final, the Sundowns coach acknowledged that their form in Egyptian Premier League proves why Pyramids got this far.

"Pyramids are a good team with good backing. You don't reach the final of the CAF Champions League by fluke.

"But Mamelodi Sundowns is equally a good team, so we have to go to Cairo, knowing that we must be better," stressed Komphela. 

Komphela concludes by adding that Sundowns will also have to rely on many of their high-profile names who know what it takes to win on the continent.
