Steve Barker questions Kaizer Chiefs’ red card and penalty record

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has questioned Kaizer Chiefs’ red card and penalty record this season.

A visibly annoyed Barker criticised match officials in the wake of Amakhosi finishing another DStv Premiership fixture against 10-men with Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens given marching orders in the first half.

Chiefs were 2-1 victors, but Barker feels they’ve been getting a lot of help this season.

"One must congratulate Chiefs; they seem to be a team that put teams under a lot of pressure. When you are getting 11/12 penalties a season, the last six matches, three red cards in the first half to opposition. Well done to them, they must be doing something right in creating problems for the opposition," he said.

Barker says referee Tshidiso Mkwanazi made some questionable calls.

"I'm disappointed in the ref today, if you remember the game, I think they had double-figure free kicks around the box. (Keagan) Dolly had three or four parts, (Happy) Mashiane had some parts, (Mdu) Shabalala had some chances to take. I'm not denying that some of those free kicks were free kicks but I'm not sure why we didn't get any free kicks in that final third around the box when Iqraam Rayners was being held on many occasions," he added.

Chiefs completed a league double over Stellenbosch this season, although Barker highlights that Amakhosi did so by getting four penalties over the two matches.

"It's done, it's over. We move on, it's four penalties against us, against Chiefs in the last two games. We were denied a penalty. So ya, those are just some of the things. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's the gold and black jersey that's intimidating," he concluded.
