Stephane Mbia: South Africans can expect good things from Hugo Broos

Cameroonian football legend and former captain Stephane Mbia is not surprised with the progress Bafana Bafana have made under head coach Hugo Broos, and backs them to do well at the 2023 AFCON finals.

Mbia was a member of the Indomitable Lions squad that won the 2017 African Cup of Nations title in Gabon with Broos at the helm.

Speaking to SABC Sport on the sidelines of the CAF Schools Championships in Durban this week, Mbia believes the Belgian tactician’s character is good for Bafana.

"No, no, no, he's a leader. He has the skill and he has a good relationship with the players. I like a lot of players from South Africa, and their idea about football," said Mbia.

"They like to touch the ball like Barcelona, and it's going to be easy for him because he has a good character and he's very close to the players, so I think it's easy to be here and they [South Africans] are going to be happy."

Having recently led the team to qualification for next year’s AFCON finals in Ivory Coast, Mbia reckons Broos will make an impact in that tournament with Bafana’s unique style of play.

"I know the South African strategy, they like to conserve [sic] the ball and he wants [his teams] to be more direct – try to score more and be strong at the back," he added.

"I think for the South African team, it's going to be good [for Broos] to be part of the next project because he likes to win games, and that's why we won the AFCON without conceding a goal. He's a good manager."
