Stellies take charge with semi-final first leg victory

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker praised his side’s “solid and professional” display after they defeated Sekhukhune United 2-0 in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final at a rain-soaked Danie Craven Stadium.

Nigerian Kazie Enyinnaya opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with his first goal for Stellies, before Devin Titus doubled the lead to give the Maroons a valuable cushion ahead of the second leg in Polokwane.

Barker says his players adapted well to the tough conditions.

"For us, it was all about staying composed and not trying to be too smart in front of our box area. We did have our moments where we were moving the ball around and asking them tough questions defensively.

"I thought we stuck to our game plan really well, and the execution of the two goals was excellent," said the chuffed coach.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch’s influential defender Thabo Moloisane continues to be linked with a possible move away from the club.

Although his contract only expires in June 2026, speculation remains strong around the newly capped Bafana Bafana international.

Barker, however, insists Moloisane remains fully committed, highlighting his professionalism and stressing that the player himself has not expressed a desire to leave.

"Moloisane would actually like to continue with us, but it is something we are working on. As a person and as a character, I have respect for him because he keeps producing good shifts despite being linked with a move."

Barker was forced into an early change when forward Ashley Cupido picked up an injury in the sixth minute.

Lesiba Nku came on and delivered a decisive performance in midfield.

Barker says the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants player gave Stellies exactly what they needed to maintain control of the tie.

Just hours before kick-off, Stellenbosch confirmed the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane from Milford FC.

He was immediately thrown into the starting lineup against Sekhukhune, becoming the club’s fifth signing of the new campaign.

Barker revealed that one more registration is still pending, but expressed excitement for the squad to settle as the season gains momentum.

The return leg is set for Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium next weekend, where Stellenbosch will aim to protect their two-goal advantage.

Kick-off at 18:00 on Saturday.
