Stanely Nwabali breaks silence on Chippa United exit

Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali insists he parted ways with Chippa United on good terms, dismissing suggestions that his departure was driven by a desire to be the club’s undisputed first choice.

The Chilli Boys made the surprise announcement yesterday morning that Nwabali had been released and was now a free agent with immediate effect.

Speaking on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, the 29-year-old was guarded when explaining the circumstances surrounding his exit.

"It's a very understanding request from both parties, it's something that is going to be nice for both parties, no hard feelings or anything," said Nwabali.

"It's an agreement that both parties will feel like [at peace], we wish each other well and I can look forward in my career.

"I've been at this club for four years, it's really nice working here, but we all really need to move forward as a player or as a manager."

Nwabali has been playing second fiddle to Dumisani Msibi, who has kept four clean sheets in Chippa’s last four Betway Premiership fixtures, but the Super Eagles number one refuted that his exit was linked to this.

"No, it's not like that. Before I went for AFCON, I was injured, let me say, from [Orlando] Pirates game and I was trying to fix myself for coming back strong for the team and also go to AFCON," he explained.

"So coming back from AFCON, it's an understanding between me and the chairman [Siviwe Mpengesi] – you're coming back from a bigger tournament and have been playing for one month, ok, you really meed to rest for like one or two games.

"That was before the decision was made, and ever since I arrived at this club, we had been talking like father and son, understanding literally everyday.

"So, like I said, when I talked to him, yes, it was difficult to take that kind of decision, but he feels like it's probably going to be best for me, which, like I said, I made this decision by myself."
