Durban City eye Nedbank Cup response against Chippa United

Durban City head coach Sinethemba Badela says his side is bracing for another demanding test against Chippa United when the teams meet again, this time in the Nedbank Cup.

The two sides faced off just days ago in a Betway Premiership fixture at Buffalo City Stadium, where the Chilli Boys claimed a 2-0 victory and exposed areas City will be eager to correct.

Badela says his technical team has carefully analysed Chippa United’s approach, identifying both their strong points and potential vulnerabilities.

He believes his players will be far better equipped for the cup encounter than they were in East London.

"They are a very difficult team. We are well aware of their strengths and also their weaknesses. We have been working very hard throughout the week to make sure that by Friday we are even more prepared than we were this past Saturday," said Badela

Badela admits that familiarity works both ways, with Chippa United also having gained valuable insight into Durban City’s structure and style after their recent league meeting.

He explains that his squad has faced a similar challenge earlier in the season, playing Polokwane City in quick succession across different competitions, and says that experience has helped them manage more effectively.

Badela also highlights the strong backing from supporters with the team boasting an impressive unbeaten record at their home venue across all competitions this campaign.

Durban City returned to the Betway Premiership this season after securing promotion by winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

They have adapted well to the demands of the league and currently occupy sixth place on the standings after 17 matches, with eight wins, four draws and six defeats.

After reaching the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup last season, Badela says his primary focus is on maintaining consistency and competitiveness, rather than setting specific milestones.

Badela took charge of Durban City in late December 2025, stepping into the role midway through the campaign following the departure of experienced coach Gavin Hunt after the opening 15 matches.

Since his arrival, he says he has developed a strong appreciation for the squad’s character and commitment.

"I must say, I am falling in love with my team more and more each day. I have only been with them for four weeks and three days, so it hasn't been a long time. Even if we were in pre-season, we wouldn't be past it yet – we would still be in pre-season. Of course, we have a lot of work to do. I must say the players are giving me everything that they have, and I am well aware of the amount of work that we still need to do but they are trying their best."
