Soweto Derby takes back seat as Cardoso prioritises Sekhukhune

Miguel Cardoso says that while he fully appreciates the magnitude of the Soweto Derby, his focus will firmly be on preparations for their upcoming clash against Sekhukhune United.

Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday in a fixture that could have major implications for the Betway Premiership title race.

However, while much of the football fraternity comes to a standstill for the country’s biggest rivalry, Cardoso will be immersed in analysis for Downs’ league assignment against Babina Noko the following day.

"Well, everybody has to play everybody. Of course, we will see the mathematics at the end of the championship. I don't even know how Chiefs played today. Look, as many points as our opponents lose, for sure they are also hoping we lose points. So I think the most important thing for us is to beat Sekhukhune [United] on Sunday, that is the focus we going to have. The day before the match I have so many things to do that I will not really be looking at the match," said Cardoso

Cardoso also suggested it was still perhaps a bit too soon to watch Chiefs given their next encounter is only in May.

Sundowns have already faced Pirates twice in the league.

"We still have Chiefs to play, but it's still far away. When the time arrives we will look at them. So I don't really know, it's a good question indeed, but I think the most important thing is that on Sunday we can show ourselves against Sekhukhune.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese mentor confirmed that winger Monnapule Saleng is still on the mend as fans continue to wait for his Sundowns debut.

"Well, Saleng is still injured. It's a situation that is obviously progressing, let's see when he can help the team."

Cardoso is, however, impressed with how midfielder Katlego ‘Tsiki’ Ntsabeleng has grabbed the opportunity to get minutes.
