Simphiwe Mafene hails Baby Wolves goalkeeper after Banyana call-up

University of Fort Hare coach Simphiwe Mafene says the national call-up of first-choice goalkeeper Katlego Moletsane serves as both recognition of her hard work and a source of motivation for the team.

Moletsane has been included in coach Desiree Ellis’ 24-player squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Algeria.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mafene described the opportunity as a significant milestone, adding that exposure to seasoned Banyana Banyana internationals will be invaluable for the young goalkeeper.

“Moletsane’s call-up is a proud moment for both the player and the club. She is a hardworking and consistent individual who maintains a positive attitude at all times. Most importantly, she is supportive of her teammates. This recognition is fully deserved.

“For the team, it’s a huge motivation. It shows that dedication and discipline are rewarded, and it inspires the rest of the squad to keep pushing for excellence,” said Mafene.

The Baby Wolves were among the standout newcomers in the Hollywoodbets Super League, finishing fourth with 52 points from 30 matches. Mafene believes that last season’s performance played a crucial role in showcasing the team’s quality, and expects more players to attract national attention.

“Absolutely. Our performances last season highlighted the quality within the squad. As we continue to grow and maintain our standards, I am confident that more players will put themselves in contention for national selection. The goal is to create an environment where players can consistently perform at a high level and attract such opportunities,” added Mafene.

The 37-year-old mentor also shared words of encouragement for Moletsane ahead of the Algeria fixtures, urging her to stay grounded and make the most of the experience.

“My advice to her would be to stay true to who she is. She should continue working hard, remain disciplined, and embrace this opportunity with confidence. She has earned this call-up, and now it’s about making the most of it - gaining experience, learning as much as she can, and contributing positively to the team environment, just as she does at the club,” he expressed.
