Seven KZN regions backing Danny Jordaan to retain SAFA Presidency

Veteran football administrator and SAFA KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Kwenza Ngwenya has no doubt president Danny Jordaan will secure a fourth successive term at the September presidential elections.

Speaking to SABC Sport ahead of the Football Transformation Forum (FTF) Congress meeting in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, Ngwenya says KZN, as the biggest SAFA province with 11 regions, are anticipating at least seven to back Jordaan at the ballot.

"KwaZulu-Natal is the biggest province in South Africa – in SAFA, we have 11 regions whereas the next [biggest] region after us would have eight," said Ngwenya.

"So you can see that KZN is much bigger, and when it comes to Football Transformation Forum in KZN, they are dominating.

"As I mentioned, we have 11 regions and so far I can guarantee you that seven are FTF, and we are still waiting because there are two regions that are still in question.

"So maybe after those regions have finished the questions, we might be nine in FTF, but for now, there are seven guaranteed to be in [favour of] FTF."

With new presidential candidate Sandile Zungu coming from KwaZulu-Natal, it was expected he could gain numbers from his home province, but the provincial chairperson says he was never approached by the faction of the AmaZulu owner.

"I will tell you I was not part of something that I've heard about, so I don't want to be strong on it – I will just share what I've heard and I'm not confirming it because I was not present," he added.

"We started to hear from social media that Mr Zungu is contesting the presidency, we were shocked, and we thought maybe he's still coming to approach us.

"But he didn't, until we heard that there will be a launch – and we also saw it on social media, surprisingly in that launch, four regions were invited and took part or supported the launch.

"I don't know whether they went voluntarily by themselves or if they were invited, but unfortunately the seven regions I'm talking about were not invited, and they didn't attend.

"As the chairperson of the province, I was not invited. I was shocked when I saw it on social media, but anyway you will never know a person's plan, we need to respect it as it is."
