SAFA to hold crucial talks with Hugo Broos

SAFA President Danny Jordaan says discussions will soon take place with Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos as uncertainty remains over the mentor’s future with the national team.

Jordaan was speaking at OR Tambo International Airport as supporters, government officials and football stakeholders welcomed the squad home following their historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

Hugo Broos’ contract expires at the end of July, and Jordaan says a private meeting will determine the next steps.

"We are going to evaluate our performance in the tournament, and we will then tell you again about the next phase of South African football. We are hopeful that we will continue on this upward trend. We now need to talk to Hugo Broos and we will let you know after that conversation."

Broos had previously indicated that the World Cup would be the final chapter of his coaching career, but the 74-year-old has recently suggested he is still considering his options.

The Belgian has transformed Bafana Bafana since taking over in 2021, guiding the team back to the World Cup and helping them achieve their best-ever performance at the global showpiece, to go with an AFCON bronze medal in 2023.

While retirement remains a possibility, both SAFA and Broos have left the door open for further discussions in the coming weeks.

"It's been a long journey of five years. We started at nr 85 in the world rankings and we've ended up now somewhere in the 40's. It's been a wonderful journey and celebration of South African football, and I'd like to thank Hugo Broos and his staff for the work they did day and night to get this team ready and to guide Bafana to the knockout rounds for the first time."

Standard Bank also reaffirmed its commitment to South African football following Bafana Bafana’s successful World Cup campaign.

Group Head of Sponsorships Bonga Sebesho says their support as SAFA’s sponsor extends across the national football structure, including Banyana Banyana ahead of the WAFCON and all South Africa’s junior national teams.
