The Bayer Leverkusen star scored in a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina as the Americans sealed progression despite playing with 10 men following Folarin Balogun’s red card.
Reflecting on the win Tillman first discussed the confidence it took to step up and convert a crucial free-kick.
"We explored the different ways we could take the free-kick. We thought about taking it under the wall, we talked about going keeper side and maybe go over the wall. I know some guys doubted me to go over the wall, but I've been practising in training."
Asked about how USA regrouped having gone a man down with Balogun sent for an early shower, Tillman added that this was testament to their fighting spirit.
Under Mauricio Pochettino the USA team has been playing with a bit more flair than usual and Tillman said it’s all credit to the squad make-up.
Next up for the USA is Belgium, and Tillman spoke about having to face another European team without their key striker Balogun.
"Of course he is a great player and he is our top scorer, but I think we have great players who can replace him and hopefully they will score some goals for us as well. We know it's going to be a tough game against Belgium but this result has given us a lot of confidence."
