SAFA presidential race is on: Jordaan and Zungu declared eligible

It’s official, it’s the incumbent Danny Jordaan versus the challenger Sandile Zungu for the South African Football Association (SAFA) presidential elections next month.

This was confirmed by the Chairperson of the SAFA Governance Committee, Dr Victor Mogajane, today, after three and a half weeks of checking the eligibility of the candidates. Since Zungu raised his hand to challenge for the SAFA top position, there were questions that were being asked about the AmaZulu owner’s eligibility, but that was all settled by the governance committee today.  Mogajane explains the process.

"In terms of the presidential list, we received two candidates, and these two were vetted. According to the list, it means the nominations for the presidential candidate are two," said Mogajane.

But in the national and provincial lists, there have been casualties, as Mogajane revealed that about 10 candidates have been found not to be eligible.

The next category is that in terms of the nominations for the national list, we received thirty nominees, and out of these, five are not legible, and only twenty-five qualify through the vetting in terms of the statutes. The third criteria have been in relation to nominations to the provincial list: twenty-seven were vetted, five did not, and twenty-two were legible.

SAFA has 52 regions, 11 associate members and the special member, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), who will be voting on the day of the elective congress on the 12th of next month. Mogajane updates on the associate members’ eligible list.

Clarifying the position, the deputy chairperson of the governance committee, Tumi Dlamini, clarified that the names of the eligible candidates will be announced by SAFA once all the candidates have been communicated with personally.

Dlamini, who has also served in the CAF governance committee previously, says the same process will also be followed in terms of officially going public with the names of the SAFA presidential candidates.
