SA weighs AFCON 2028 bid, possible partnership with Botswana

SABC Sport has learnt that South Africa is showing a strong interest to do a joint bid with Botswana for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

There’s been reports that Morocco could be in line again to host the AFCON in 2028, which would be the last one before the new four year cycle kicks in, until 2032.

Southern Africa last hosted the AFCON in 2013, and since then it’s been to Central Africa (Equatorial Guinea 2015, Gabon 2017 and Cameroon 2019), West Africa (Ivory Coast 2023) and North Africa (Egypt 2019 and Morocco 2025).

The 2027 edition will be held in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania).

Minister of Sports from some African countries are in Rabat ahead of Sunday’s AFCON final between hosts Morocco and Senegal, including Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie.

This is a developing story…
