Aubrey Modiba admits being blind sided by Monnapule Saleng capture

Mamelodi Sundowns wingback Aubrey Modiba has admitted to being caught off guard by the club's signing of former Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng.

The Brazilians have already confirmed three new signings in the January transfer window, with Saleng the most prominent and exciting moves of the window, following his six-month loan at Orbit College on the back of initially being frozen out at Pirates.

Modiba, who also just returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana, has told SABC Sport he was pleasantly surprised by the 27-year-old's unveiling on social media.

"I was very surprised, I didn't see it coming. I don't wanna lie but I was like, wow, what a signing for us. I was very happy and excited and I couldn't wait to meet him and see where his head space is and you know he can help us in the team," Modiba said.

With Saleng's mental space admittedly a key factor, Postman believes once he is reminded of his abilities, they will surely see the best of the 2023 DStv Premiership Player's Player of the Season again.

"I think we must just remind him about the qualities that he has. I think that's the first start because he's got the quality. He couldn't have played for Pirates if he didn't have quality, so, for him being at Pirates shows that he's a great player and we've seen what he's done at Pirates. He can help and I'm just happy to have him in the team," Modiba added.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup also on the horizon, the 30-year-old Bafana defender is confident a fully fit and firing Saleng can return to the national team fold in the next few months.

"Yeah, of course, age is still on his side, the quality, yes like I've said, he can still help us and he was there, he was part of the team before in the qualifiers. It shows the qualities that he has, so, I still believe he can still go back to the national team and help the national team.

“For him to do that it's to make sure he does well at Sundowns first, he shows the quality then he goes back to the national team. I believe he can help us."
