Refiloe Jane relieved to achieve Banyana Banyana objective

Banyana Banyana captain Refiloe Jane expressed relief that the team managed to achieve its objective of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Banyana claimed a 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their second round second leg to advance to the tournament with a 2-1 aggregate win at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday night.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Jane admitted that DRC were a tough opponent, but she is happy that the team’s efforts in the second leg came with the much-desired reward.

"It was difficult playing against DR Congo, even in the first leg it was difficult but we got a positive [1-1] result though, and we are happy that today we didn't lose the match so we reached out objective, which was to qualify for the WAFCON," said Jane.

"We could have won the game in the first half, but we missed those chances that we created – something that we need to work on, but in the end we are happy that we were able to get the goal and be comfortable."

Jane further unpacks Banyana’s strategic plan against a physical Congolese side, stating that it was key for them to stick to their usual style of play.

"Yes, it was not easy playing against a physical side who also has fast attackers, so we needed to play the ball on the ground with quick movements, ball rotation and player rotation, so that it would become easier," she added.

"They are not good with man marking, so the more we moved around the more it was difficult for them to play, so we needed to make sure we play our normal style of football."
