Mamelodi Sundowns reward Khuliso Mudau with bumper new contract

Mamelodi Sundowns have rewarded defender Khuliso Mudau with a new four-year contract, SABC Sport can confirm.

The right-back has been one of the key pillars of the championship-winning side and has also been on the Bafana Bafana radar, although there’s been an ongoing outcry in the football fraternity that Mudau needs more regular national team call-ups under coach Hugo Broos.

Mudau was crowned DStv Premiership Defender of the Season last month, ahead of stiff competition from two centre-backs – Orlando Pirates’ Nkosinathi Sibisi as well as Given Msimango of TS Galaxy.

It’s understood his notable contribution during the 2022/23 campaign gave The Brazilians even more reason to draw up a new contract for the 28-year-old, with the initial one soon coming to an end.

Sundowns signed Mudau from Black Leopards in July 2020 and SABC Sport now understands the club have made the big call to offer him new terms to keep him at Chloorkop at least for the next four years.

Another impressive factor is the player’s appearance statistics in what was a busy 2022/23 season for Sundowns, who were juggling between the CAF Champions League, their domestic title defense, as well as the local cup competition.

Mudau made a whopping 39 appearances – scoring two goals and adding one assist to his overall contribution, as Downs clinched a record sixth consecutive league crown with seven games to spare.

Contacted for comment on the latest developments, the player's agent was reluctant to go into more detail.

“I can’t speak about the specifics of any player’s contract. You need to speak to the club about that,” said Steve Kapelushnick.

“But what I can say is that Khuliso has had a wonderful season at Sundowns – winning the Defender of the Season, the league title in record time, as well as a great run in the Champions League. He is motivated and is looking forward to the new campaign.”
