Wiliete clash on par with MTN8 and Intercontinental Cup for Sundowns

Wiliete clash on par with MTN8 and Intercontinental Cup for Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has stressed that Friday night’s CAF Champions League group stage play-off against Wiliete SC carries the same importance as the club’s recent MTN8 and FIFA Intercontinental Cup fixtures.

The Brazilians claimed victories over Orlando Pirates in the domestic cup and Saudi giants Al Ahli in the Intercontinental Cup but now face a crucial test as they look to continue their African title defence.

After being held to a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola last Sunday, Cardoso says his team have worked even harder to improve ahead of the return fixture at Loftus Versfeld.

"This game is another final for us because we've been playing finals since the season started and that is the reality. This competition is comprised of stages, and there are finals to play at every stage."

Cardoso admitted that the result on the road has left the tie open for either Sundowns or Wiliete to progress to the next phase.

"We know that if we win we will go through and if we draw 0-0 again then we will go for penalties, but if we draw with goals then we are out so we have to bring our best level."

The Portuguese mentor also pointed out that Sundowns have to be absolutely meticulous having previously been eliminated by an Angolan team in the Champions League.
