Sundowns suffer shock CAF Champions League elimination as Wiliete SC progress on away goals

Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered a shock CAF Champions League exit after being eliminated by Angolan side Wiliete SC on away goals following a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night.

After a goalless first leg, Tashreeq Matthews put Sundowns ahead in the 11th minute, but Mabululu equalised four minutes into the second half to send Wiliete through.

Sundowns started brightly, piling on the pressure and winning several early corners before Matthews broke the deadlock with a shot that took a significant deflection off Arao Lologi, leaving goalkeeper Elber Delgado stranded.

The hosts continued to create chances, with Delgado denying Aubrey Modiba before Ronwen Williams produced an excellent save to keep out Miguel Vieira's header at the other end.

Sundowns went into half-time with their narrow lead intact, but a costly mistake early in the second half changed the tie. A misplaced pass from Cassius Mailula allowed Mabululu to surge forward and curl a finish beyond the advancing Williams.

The Brazilians immediately pushed for a response, but Delgado kept out Marcelo Allende's close-range header before producing a superb double save to deny Brayan Leon and Matthews.

Leon missed another major opportunity when he blazed over from a promising position, while a later close-range header from the striker drifted narrowly wide with Delgado beaten.

Sundowns threw more players forward as the clock ticked down, but despite dominating possession and pinning Wiliete back, they could not find the decisive goal.

The visitors held firm to secure a famous result, eliminating the reigning champions before the group stages for the first time in more than a decade.
