Pep Guardiola refuses to risk Rodri for FA Cup semi-final as Man City eye title run-in

The Spain international, who was forced off late in last weekend's key win over Arsenal, also sat out the midweek victory against Burnley. Despite making progress, Guardiola has made it clear there will be no unnecessary risks taken with one of his most influential players.

Asked for an update on Rodri's condition, Guardiola said: "He is better." However, he ruled him out of the Wembley clash, adding: "No, we don't want to take the risk."

Speaking ahead of the meeting with Southampton, Guardiola stressed that protecting Rodri's fitness for the decisive run-in is the priority. With City chasing another Premier League title, the manager is wary of losing the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner for an extended spell.

Rodri's recent injury struggles date back to a serious knee issue earlier in the previous season, and while Guardiola remains hopeful of having him back soon, he stopped short of guaranteeing his involvement in the upcoming league fixture against Everton on May 4.

With over a week until that match, Guardiola acknowledged it could be a realistic return date but maintained a cautious stance. "I don't know yet. Hopefully. But we don't want to take a risk, because if he's injured, we'll lose him for the next five games. And Rodri is so important," he said.

City head into the semi-final on the back of a physically and emotionally demanding period, particularly following their intense encounter with Arsenal. Guardiola hinted at possible rotation, acknowledging the toll recent fixtures have taken on his squad, compounded by travel and preparation challenges.

The City boss also highlighted potential difficulties at Wembley, pointing to the condition of the pitch and the unpredictability of the opposition as factors that could influence the game.

Southampton, currently in strong form and unbeaten since January, have already eliminated both Fulham and Arsenal en route to the last four. Guardiola warned his side will not underestimate the Championship outfit as they pursue a fourth consecutive FA Cup final appearance.

Elsewhere, defensive duo Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol are also unavailable, although Guardiola confirmed the remainder of his squad is fit for selection.

With silverware and a league title on the line, City's cautious approach underlines just how pivotal Rodri remains to their ambitions in the closing weeks of the season.
