Own-goal secures grinding win for Chelsea against Jose Mourinho's Benfica, Liverpool lose

Chelsea secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Jose Mourinho's Benfica at Stamford Bridge, thanks to an 18th-minute own goal by defender Richard Rios.

The own goal came from good build-up play, as Pedro Neto's cross was volleyed across the six-yard box by Alejandro Garnacho, with Rios deflecting the ball into his own net while attempting to clear.

The win was a much-needed result for Enzo Maresca's side as they look to build momentum in the competition. However, the performance was far from a classic, with Chelsea failing to convert subsequent chances and suffering a late setback.

Second-half substitute Joao Pedro was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card, marking the third red card for a Chelsea player in their last four matches across all competitions.

This narrow win puts Chelsea on the board after their opening Champions League fixture.

Penalty and VAR drama lead to Liverpool defeat

Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat on a raucous night in Istanbul against Galatasaray. The hosts took the lead in the 16th minute when Victor Osimhen converted a penalty, awarded after Dominik Szoboszlai was judged to have caught Baris Alper Yilmaz with a flailing arm.

The goal arrived just moments after Liverpool themselves had a shot cleared off the line, highlighting the fine margins of the game.

Manager Arne Slot controversially benched Mohamed Salah, though the Egyptian was introduced after the hour mark along with Alexander Isak, but could not inspire a comeback.

Liverpool's night was compounded by an injury to goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The Reds thought they had a late chance to level when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Ibrahima Konate, but the decision was overturned by VAR, confirming a disappointing second consecutive loss for the Premier League champions.

Late own-goal salvages a point for Tottenham

Tottenham narrowly avoided a shock defeat in the Arctic Circle, coming back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Champions League newcomers Bodo/Glimt.

Despite an early let-off when the Norwegian side missed a first-half penalty, Spurs were poor and fell behind to a second-half brace from Jens Petter Hauge (53', 66').

The visitors mounted a swift response, with Micky van de Ven heading home from a Pedro Porro cross just two minutes after the second goal.

A frantic finish saw Tottenham push hard for an equaliser, which eventually arrived in the 89th minute when an effort from substitute Archie Gray was turned into his own net by Bodo/Glimt defender Jostein Gundersen, with Richarlison applying pressure.

The late own goal secured a hard-fought point for Thomas Frank's side, maintaining their unbeaten start to the Champions League campaign after two games.
