Orbit College plans to win over North-West supporters

Betway Premiership newcomers Orbit College are counting on the football-hungry fans in the North-West province to rally behind the team in the 2025/26 season.

A lot of convincing is needed to sway them away from the big Gauteng teams. Speaking at the season launch in Johannesburg yesterday, coach Pogiso Makhoye believes that the only way to win the support there will be through positive results, and for them to retain their status at the end of the campaign.

Makhoye and his team had to go via the promotion/relegation play-offs, but in the end beat Cape Town City and Casric Stars to book their place in the top-tier.

"The only way for fans to start supporting us and not other teams depends on our performances on the pitch. No one wants to support a losing team, so we must make sure that we bring our A game, and in that way, we can attract some big crowds," said the ambitious coach.

Makhoye believes that they can spring a few surprises in the top league, just like their meteoric rise in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Orbit were promoted to the first division just two seasons ago, and finished ninth and second in 2023/24 and 2024/25, respectively.

They face Amazulu away from home in their first assignment this weekend.

It is a game that’s sure to test their readiness for this level, with Usuthu having done better than expected last term.

Coach Makhoye says the worst result for them in Durban must be a draw.

"After their match last weekend, we expect AmaZulu to have match sharpness. We have to go there and do what we usually do."

A lot of talk has been around whether Orbit College will be affected by the Cape Town City appeal against Marumo Gallants, but the coach could not be bothered by boardroom matters.

He pointed out how they also blocked out the noise from the case that involved Cape Town Spurs, JDR Stars, and Durban City at the end of last season.
