Nigeria is too focused on rivalry with Bafana Bafana - Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha

According to Nigerian football legend Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha, the Super Eagles are currently placing more emphasis on their rivalry with Bafana Bafana than focusing on their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Despite Lesotho, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Benin also being part of the group, Okocha asserts that Bafana poses the most significant threat to the Super Eagles.

Currently, Rwanda leads the group with four points, followed by Bafana with three points. Nigeria, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe are all tied at two points each, with Benin at the bottom with one point after two games.

Okocha expressed his dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles start to their qualifying campaign in an interview with SABC Sport.

"Oooh, yes. I mean, we didn't get off to a good start, talking about Nigeria, South Africa as well. I think we are focusing more on the rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria instead of focusing more on qualifying. I think we should change our mindset and focus more on the qualification instead of focusing on the two countries and their rivalries," Okocha said.

The Egyptian Football Association has selected goalkeeper Esaam EL – Hadary to serve as its goalkeeper coach.

Taking a cue from this decision, the Nigeria Football Association is making strides in enhancing its goalkeeping department.

They enlisted the assistance of Idah Peterside and Vincent Enyeama, a move that garnered approval from Okocha.

"Generally, you need players that have been there. Players that can speak from experience. Players that can inspire the current players. I think it's a good initiative, it's a good way of trying to get these players to understand what's at stake when it comes to playing for your national team. There's nothing better than having somebody that has been there."
