Nico Schlotterbeck shoots down Dortmund contract renewal claims

Nico Schlotterbeck has dismissed reports suggesting he is close to signing a new contract with Borussia Dortmund, insisting talks remain unresolved despite growing speculation around his future.

The German centre-back had been linked with both Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent months, with interest building ahead of the July transfer window.

Reports in Germany had claimed Dortmund were close to securing an extension until 2031, but the player himself has now made it clear that no such agreement is in place.

Speaking after Germany's recent international match, Schlotterbeck firmly rejected the rumours.

"I'm glad you asked me, because I just read it in your news," he said. "To be honest, I have to categorically deny it. Unfortunately, we have not reached that point yet."

The defender also pointed to changes behind the scenes at Dortmund as a key factor slowing negotiations. He explained that previous discussions had taken place with former sporting director Sebastian Kehl, but responsibilities have since shifted.

"I negotiated with Sebastian for a long time. Sebastian is no longer here," Schlotterbeck said. "Now Ole (Book) is my point of contact, along with Lars (Ricken). That's why I was looking forward to your question. But what you are saying is absolutely not true."

Schlotterbeck repeated that a breakthrough is not close, admitting the situation remains complicated for both himself and the club.

"I've already spoken with him, but we haven't reached the point where a renewal is imminent," he said. "This is also unfortunate for BVB fans, but as I said, it's not an easy situation for me."

With his current deal running until 2027, Dortmund still have time, but uncertainty continues to grow. Meanwhile, Barcelona are still monitoring defensive options, with Inter's Alessandro Bastoni also among the names linked as they look to strengthen at the back.

For now, Schlotterbeck's future remains open, with talks ongoing but no agreement in sight.
