New Belouizdad president holds key to Mayo's Chiefs future

Kaizer Chiefs may yet retain the services of Khanyisa Mayo, but SABC Sport understands that the striker's future could ultimately rest in the hands of CR Belouizad's new president, Mohamed Arar.

Mayo joined The Glamour Boys on a season-long loan from the Algerian giants in September last year with an option to make the move permanent, though the situation has become increasingly complex in recent weeks.

The 27-year-old international endured an injury-hit campaign at Naturena, making 15 appearances and scoring only two goals when much more was expected from the forward with a proven pedigree in the Premier Soccer League.

His lack of continuity, coupled with coaching changes at Chiefs – is believed to have delayed a final decision on whether the club will exercise their option to retain Mayo beyond June 30.

The public broadcaster has been led to believe by those close to the player that negotiations remain ongoing, with all parties still assessing the best way forward ahead of the new season.

Complicating matters further is the recent appointment of Arar as president at CR Belouizdad since May this year.

SABC Sport understands that the new club boss is expected to play a key role in determining transfer movements, including Mayo's future, particularly as the Algerian side reassesses its squad and strategy.

There are indications that the player's injury setback could yet influence the outcome, while the transfer window may ultimately dictate whether Mayo remains in Soweto or returns to North Africa.

It’s well-documented now that the Algerian outfit has been banned by FIFA from registering players and this too could be the plot twist.

For now, Chiefs and CR Belouizdad continue discussions behind the scenes, with Arar seemingly holding the cards in one of the PSL's more intriguing transfer sagas.
