Mtsweni finds silver lining in Carling KO exit, as TS Galaxy turn attention to league struggles

Faced with the difficulty of unfavourable results in the Betway Premiership, TS Galaxy interim coach Esau Mtsweni says their elimination in the Carling Knockout was a blessing in disguise, so that they can focus on the league.

Mtsweni was speaking after a 3-0 hammering they received at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs in the last 16 clash played at the FNB Stadium last night. The Rockets are currently placed in 13th spot on the log, with only six points from eight matches, justifying Mtsweni’s comments about prioritising the league over the cup competition.

"I think the most important thing for us now is the league, and maybe this exit was a blessing in disguise so that we can concentrate more on the league because that's what matters for us now. I don't want to say this, but I think it was a blessing in disguise," said Mtsweni.

"Obviously, we came here to win, but seeing this performance, I think it was good for us to be eliminated so that we can concentrate on the real deal. I mean, everyone wants to play cups and in finals, but you can't play a final while you're not doing well in the league."

Galaxy centre-back Veluyeke Zulu was brought in as a substitute inside the first 25 minutes in the game, but by the 79th minute he was subbed out again. This was around the time when he had already caused a penalty and also been beaten to the second goal by the hat-trick for the night, Wandile Duba. Mtsweni says they had no choice but to take Zulu out, due to what he perceived as a below-par performance on the night.

Galaxy have now conceded 15 goals in just nine matches in all competitions, and just six in the last two matches. Mtsweni also lamented their first-half performance, and he says it was from that moment that he could see they were going nowhere.

Galaxy are now winless in their last five matches, with four losses and they have failed to score during this period. Mtsweni, who recently replaced Bernard Parker on the bench, says creating chances is not an issue, but converting them is another problem.
