Mkhalele reveals surprise at Moremi’s AFCON performances

Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele says they were all taken by surprise at how the team’s attacker Tshepang Moremi has adapted at this Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament and proven to be one of the key players for the team

In an exclusive interview with SABC Sport from the team’s base camp in Marrakech, Mkhalele relayed how Moremi had looked reserved going into their first Group B game against Angola.

But once he was introduced in the second half against Angola, he never looked back - to Mkhalele’s surprise and the rest of the technical team...

"I was a little bit surprised because going into that game, we couldn't see that same confidence in training, but when we brought him in, he just surprised everybody with his confidence, quality, and discipline to stick to the game plan."

The Orlando Pirates winger has since started the last two matches against Egypt and Zimbabwe, and he’s counting an assist already, and Mkhalele, an AFCON-winning winger from 1996, says with more focus---Moremi can achieve a lot in this tournament...

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana will travel from Marrakech to Rabat today as they look to conclude their preparations for their next assignment in the AFCON round of 16 clash against Cameroon at the Al Madina Stadium on Sunday. Mkhalele says their main areas of concern now are to find consistency in their play.

"We are busy working on trying to find consistency, especially in our tactical plan. Right now, we feel that the team structure is very good, but now we need to be more consistent.

"Immediately after our day off, we have been working on that."

Bafana are now coming up against a Cameroonian team that was beset with problems, arriving at this tournament with two coaches and two squads.

But coach David Pagou has instilled discipline and brought new life to the Indomitable Lions squad, with two wins and a draw in the group stages.

Bafana head coach Hugo Broos knows the country very well, having led them to their fifth AFCON title in 2017, and Mkhalele has noticed their improvements as well...

The spotlight in Rabat will also be on the weather, with a 100% chance of rain on Sunday, and Mkhalele says they've been monitoring it as well.
