Mercy Chipasula believes team effort will be key for Zambia to succeed at WAFCON

Zambia teenage sensation Mercy Chipasula believes team effort will be key as they look to contend for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July.

This after the Copper Queen lost the Three-Nation series Cup at the hands of South Africa in the finals at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, on Tuesday.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Chipasula says the team will go to the drawing board to fix a few mistakes in their final WAFCON preparations.

“We are a good team, we just need to work together to make sure we achieve our goal at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. We only have a few mistakes that we need to work on, which the coach has noted during the Three-Nation series. Those are the things we will be working to rectify in our final preparations for WAFCON,’’ said Chipasula.

Zambia secured a 1-1 draw in their Three-Nation series opening fixture, and wrapped up the tournament with 2-0 defeat against Banyana Banyana in the finals.

Chipasula says the tournament allowed the technical to gauge the team’s performance ahead of WAFCON.

“The tournament was good, and we also played well. Like I said there’s only a few mistakes we have picked up from the tournament. It also allowed the coach to assess the team,’’ added Chipasula.

The 17-year-old attacker is no stranger to major tournaments and high performance, having led the junior side to back-to-back FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifications, and also helped them to secure the 2024 COSAFA U17 Girls Championship, where she claimed the Golden Boot and Player of the Player of the of the Tournament accolades. Chipasula believes that she can emulate that performance with the senior team in Morocco.

“I believe in myself. I think I have the right mindset to play well at Wafcon and leave a mark just as I did during the Cosafa Championship last year,’’ she expressed.
