Maritzburg United mulling over club future following relegation

Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia is believed to be weighing up his options following the club's relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The Team of Choice relinquished their DStv Premiership status earlier this month after failing to beat Cape Town Spurs in the Premier Soccer League's Promotion/Relegation play-offs.

SABC Sport understands the club had a meeting with a few of its backers last week, during which discussions were held over the future of the club.

According to the information gathered, there are considerations of either purchasing a topflight status or selling its existing status for another party to run the club in the first division, where the financial support from the PSL is significantly less.

"The club chairman is considering making a tough decision. He may be forced to sell the status to someone else if he does not get the [financial] support he is looking for," an insider told SABC Sport.

"There have been attempts to buy a DStv Premiership status, with two clubs approached, but it is not clear what may become of those talks.

"The next meeting will give clarity on whether Farook Kadodia remains in football or sells the club and, if he remains, whether it will be in the Premiership or in the lower division."

Kadodia is on record about the financial struggles of running the club without more sponsorship, which often forced them to sell their top players over the past few seasons to raise funds to maintain the running of the team.

Maritzburg have already lost several players who have recently bid the club farewell, while coach Fadlu Davids has already started a new venture with former Orlando Pirates coach Jozef Zinnbauer at Raja Casablanca in Morocco.

Attempts by the public broadcaster's sports desk to obtain comments from the club but Kadodia's phone went to voicemail.
