Mamelodi Sundowns surged to the top of the Betway Premiership table on Sunday afternoon after a dominant 3-0 victory over 10-man Magesi FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
The hosts entered the match sitting third on the log with 11 points, trailing joint-leaders Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs by two. With this result, they leapfrogged both and now sit alone at the summit with 14 points.
Despite being the overwhelming favourites, Sundowns endured a nervy opening spell as Magesi started brightly. Within the first ten minutes, Wonderboy Makhubu sprinted into space down the left flank and fired a low effort that forced Ronwen Williams into a sharp save.
Tashreeq Matthews then tested Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze with a stinging effort in the 13th minute, which the Zimbabwean did well to parry away. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Thapelo Morena's miscued cross bounced invitingly into the path of 19-year-old Kutlwano Letlhaku, who finished neatly from close range after reacting first inside the box.
Just before the break, Magesi's challenge became steeper when Samuel Darpoh was sent off for a second bookable offence after a clumsy challenge on Arthur Sales. Playing with a numerical disadvantage, Magesi introduced Kabelo Mahlasela and Abbey Seseane in an attempt to stabilise, but Sundowns remained in full control.
Iqraam Rayners, recalled to the starting lineup alongside Mosa Lebusa, doubled the lead in the 65th minute after slotting home at the back post from another dangerous Morena delivery, before grabbing his second of the match with a well-placed header from an Aubrey Modiba assist.
From there, Sundowns managed the closing stages with composure and professionalism. Aside from a speculative effort by Makhubu that drifted wide, Magesi looked deflated and unable to mount any meaningful response.
The result extended Sundowns' unbeaten run and saw them seize early control of the title race, with a top-of-the-table clash between their nearest rivals still to come.
