Mamelodi Sundowns sign Brazilian midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa

Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa from Belgian second-division side SK Beveren.

The 24-year-old arrives at Chloorkop following an impressive 2022/23 season in the Belgian Challenger Pro League, in which he managed 11 goals and eight assists.

Despite his contribution, his team narrowly missed out on promotion to the Jupiler Pro League, finishing second on the play-off table.

He has become the fourth South American in the reigning DStv Champions' squad, alongside midfielders Gaston Sirino (Argentina), Marcelo Allende (Chile) and Erwin Saavedra (Bolivia).

The Brazilians are once again bolstering their squad with the aim of securing a second CAF Champions League title as they once again fell short at the semi-final hurdle, losing to runners-up Wydad Athletic Club on goal difference last season.

Sundowns have already signed winger Lesiba Nku and attacking midfielder Junior Mendieta this transfer window, and are expected to rope in a couple more players in the coming weeks before the transfer window closed at the end of August.

Several players have also parted ways with the club, including midfield quartet Andile Jali, Haashim Domingo, Suprise Ralani and Lesedi Kapinga.
