Magesi survival fight goes down to the wire

Magesi FC head coach Allan Freese praised his team’s discipline and defensive structure after they earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Cape Town City FC in the penultimate fixture of the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs at Athlone Stadium.

The visitors adopted a patient approach for much of the contest, allowing City to dominate possession while remaining compact at the back and limiting clear-cut opportunities.

After Therlo Moosa handed the hosts the lead before halftime, Mcedi Vandala struck shortly after the interval to bring Magesi level and shift the momentum of the encounter.

Freese says he was particularly satisfied with his side’s organisation and commitment without the ball.

"I think we did well in the first half, we played according to the game plan, and in the second half we managed to find our equaliser, but from that point on the game could've gone either way. I'm happy with our defensive organisation."

Magesi were forced to withstand intense pressure in the closing stages as City pushed desperately for a winning goal.

Despite the late scare, they remained resilient and secured a valuable point, keeping their destiny in their own hands heading into the final round of fixtures.

Freese believes his side’s equaliser arrived at a crucial stage of the match.

"Things have been more encouraging in the change room. We just said come guys let's keep going, something will happen for us, and luckily when we came back in the second half something happened for us. The best part of it all is that we defended properly."

Magesi’s Premiership future will now be decided in their final playoff match against Milford FC at Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

A victory would guarantee top-flight football for Dikwena tša Meetse next season, while any slip-up, a draw or loss, opens the door for the KZN outfit.

Freese acknowledged the significance of playing the decisive fixture at home but stressed that his team must remain focused to deliver another disciplined performance when it matters most.
