Liverpool clinch Premier League title with thumping win over Spurs at Anfield

The Reds clinched the title for the second time in five years to draw level with Manchester United with a record-equalling 20 league titles.

Dutchman Arne Slot became only the fifth manager in Premier League history to win the title in his first season in charge, although his success owed much to the side he inherited from Jurgen Klopp, who departed the Reds last season after nine years in charge.

During that time, Klopp turned Liverpool into a side equally able to attack and hold possession while also giving little away on defence, and their success this season was built on players Klopp helped turn into world beaters - none more so than African great Mohamed Salah, who played a hugely instrumental role in their title-winning campaign.

"It feels great. I don't think I want to say a lot. The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp," Slot told LFCTV after the match.

"I am 99.9% sure that if I pick up my phone there will be a message from Jurgen," he added when speaking to the BBC.

"So many moments in the season the two of us have had contact. I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me.

"But what mattered most is the team he left behind that was able to win the trophy."

Sunday's match against Spurs was a one-sided affair, with strikes from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and that man Salah allowing them to wrap up the title with ease.

An own goal from Destiny Udogie compounded Spurs' woes, who managed only one goal from Dominic Solanke.

Liverpool's march towards the title seemed unstoppable this season as they led for virtually the entire campaign, which included a 27-match unbeaten run.

Egyptian great Salah was never far from the action, topping both the goal and assist rankings in what is sure to go down as one of the greatest individual seasons in Premier League history.

While the Reds were also helped by the struggles of their perennial rivals Manchester City this season, they thoroughly deserved their success, wrapping up the title with four matches to spare.
