Liverpool, Porto release statements after tragic death of Diogo Jota

Liverpool and FC Porto have led the tributes following the tragic death of Portugal international Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in northern Spain at the age of 28.

Both clubs issued heartfelt statements, with Liverpool requesting privacy for Jota's family as they grieve, while Porto expressed their shock and devastation at the loss of their former player.

The fatal crash occurred on the A-52 road in the province of Zamora - a key route used by travellers leaving northern Portugal.

Jota is believed to have been travelling with his younger brother, Andre Jota, 26, who is also a footballer and is feared to have also died in the accident.

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," a Liverpool statement read.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

The tragedy comes just two weeks after Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. The couple had recently celebrated their wedding in what was described by friends as a joyful and intimate ceremony.

His former club FC Porto stated: "It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks.

"Rest in peace."

Jota had enjoyed a distinguished career with clubs including Porto, Wolverhampton, and most recently Liverpool, where he became a fan favourite for his sharp attacking play and tireless work ethic.
