Manchester City 3-2 Ipswich Town: Haaland strikes twice as City stay perfect

Manchester City extended their winning start to the Premier League season to seven matches with a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town.

The atmosphere was hostile before kick-off, with supporters booing the Premier League anthem during City's first home league match since being found guilty of more than 100 alleged financial rule breaches.

City initially struggled to take control, but Phil Foden opened the scoring by converting Jeremy Doku's dangerous cross. Ipswich responded quickly, with Daizen Maeda racing through to equalise after Abdoul Ouattara played an excellent ball behind Marc Guehi.

Erling Haaland restored City's lead before half-time, rising to meet Mateo Kovacic's cross and head home. Christian Walton kept Ipswich in contention with a series of saves, including an impressive stop to deny Ruben Dias from distance.

Ipswich continued to threaten after the break, with Emersonn and Nico O'Reilly missing headed chances, but Haaland struck again to put City 3-1 ahead. The Norwegian exploited space through the middle of the defence before calmly finishing.

Zian Flemming converted a late penalty to give Ipswich hope, while VAR denied Haaland the chance to complete his hat-trick in the closing stages. City nevertheless held on to secure all three points.

The victory extended City's unbeaten Premier League run against newly promoted opposition to 32 matches and maintained their perfect start to the campaign. Only two teams had previously won their opening seven league games in Premier League history, and both went on to claim the title.

Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Reds punish nine-man Bees in comeback victory

Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 in the Premier League, with the hosts finishing the match with nine men after two red cards.

The sides created few clear chances in the opening 20 minutes, although Brentford gradually grew into the contest. Igor Thiago was denied by a key defensive intervention from Jeremy Jacquet, while Liverpool threatened on the counter-attack.

Brentford broke the deadlock just before half-time when Thiago delivered a well-judged cross and Keane Lewis-Potter stretched to guide the ball past Alisson. However, the hosts suffered a major setback in stoppage time when Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off for directing his head towards Jacquet during an altercation.

Liverpool initially struggled to break down Brentford's compact defence after the restart, with Caoimhin Kelleher making an important save to deny Alexis Mac Allister. The visitors eventually drew level when Victor Munoz cut inside and calmly guided the ball into the corner.

Alexander Isak then completed Liverpool's comeback, controlling the ball under pressure before finishing past Kelleher to make it 2-1. Liverpool pushed for a third, with Bradley Barcola striking the crossbar, while Thiago missed a late opportunity to equalise.

Brentford's hopes of rescuing a point were further dented in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card for stopping a promising Liverpool counter-attack. The hosts were left to finish the match with nine players.

The victory ended Liverpool's wait for a league win against Brentford under their current Spanish coach, following a difficult previous record in the fixture. It also ended Brentford's unbeaten start to the campaign and lifted Liverpool above the Bees in the Premier League standings.
