Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah clinches record third PFA Player of the Year award

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been crowned the PFA Player of the Year for a record third time, becoming the first player ever to achieve the feat.

In doing so, the Egyptian has surpassed two-time winners such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, and Gareth Bale.

Salah's 2024â-25 season wasn't just prolific - it was historic. The 33-year-old forward led the Premier League with 29 goals and 18 assists, powering Liverpool to the league title, finishing 10 points clear of runners-up Arsenal. In doing so, he swept the season's top individual honors, also winning the Premier League Player of the Season, the Golden Boot, and the Playmaker award - the first player in history to win all three in a single campaign.

This marks Salah's third PFA Player of the Year win, following his honors in 2018 and 2022. The award is voted on by fellow professionals across the 92 Premier League and Football League clubs. This year, he triumphed over a high-caliber shortlist that included Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, and Chelsea's rising star Cole Palmer.

The Pharaohs forward, who joined Liverpool in 2017, accepted the award at a gala in Manchester on Tuesday. Reflecting on his journey, Salah said:

"I look at myself now, a guy coming from Egypt and making it to the top level, making history today - it's something that makes me so proud."

He also acknowledged the emotional and structural changes within Liverpool over the summer, including a busy transfer window and the tragic loss of teammate Diogo Jota. Asked whether this season's squad is stronger, Salah responded thoughtfully:

"You can't say yes or no, it's tricky. You're signing great talent, but also losing key players. And of course, we all know what happened with one of our teammates.

"Virgil (van Dijk), me, and the rest of the senior guys try to help. Playing for Liverpool isn't easy - the pressure, the spotlight, the expectations - it's a lot for young players. We're here to guide them."

Further sealing his commitment to the club, Salah signed a two-year contract extension in April, putting to rest speculation of a potential move to the Saudi Pro League.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers was named PFA Young Player of the Year, becoming the first Villa player to win the award since James Milner in 2010. The 23-year-old midfielder impressed with eight league goals in 37 starts, and four goals in the Champions League - including a standout hat-trick against Celtic.

Liverpool's dominance continued in the PFA Team of the Year, with four Reds - Salah, Mac Allister, Virgil van Dijk, and Ryan Gravenberch - earning places in the XI. Notably, no Manchester City player featured in the team for the first time since 2017.

Salah now joins - and surpasses - elite company. Prior two-time winners include Thierry Henry (2003 & 2004), Cristiano Ronaldo (2007 & 2008), Gareth Bale (2011 & 2013), Kevin De Bruyne (2020 & 2021), Alan Shearer (1995 & 1997), and Mark Hughes (1989 & 1991). But with three titles, Salah now stands alone at the summit of PFA greatness.

With his latest campaign already underway - and another goal in the season opener against Bournemouth taking his tally to 187 Premier League goals, tying him for fourth all-time alongside Andy Cole - Salah shows no sign of slowing down.
