Lee Langeveldt: Stellenbosch FC will do it for Oshwin Andries

2023 started very badly for Stellenbosch FC, who lost one of their gems and golden finds in former South Africa U20 international captain Oshwin Andries after he succumbed to stab wounds in a Cape Town hospital.

But as the curtain drops this year, a proud son of the Stellenbosch community, veteran goalkeeper and club captain Lee Langeveldt says tomorrow’s Carling Knockout final against TS Galaxy will be dedicated to the late Andries.

"We are a community team, we play ball for our fans, we play for Stellenbosch. Not only for Stellenbosch but I think we represent the whole Western Cape at the moment and of course we do it for Oshwin. I think every day when we have meetings we see his kit in the meeting room and he still inspires us to do well," Langeveldt said.

Stellenbosch are currently one of the most in-form teams in the premier division – unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions, and having won eight of those games.

Now, leading up to the final, Langeveldt says their form can’t be ignored.

"Excited and I think we are confident. I think in the last 11 games we've shown good form, winning nine but really excited. Being a local is a bit extra special for me. Growing up in these parts of the world, it wasn't easy regarding football and look where the team is now. Fighting for a cup," he added.

Despite the confidence in the Stellies camp, New Zealand-born attacker Andre de Jong says they will give Galaxy the respect they deserve because they have seen The Rockets’ quality under head coach Sead Ramovic.

"Ya, I think Galaxy pose a real threat. I think they're a very good cup team. They're tough to break down I think we got them on a good day that day and obviously they knocked Sundowns out to get this far. So, I think we are giving them a lot of respect and although we are favourites, we are very wary of the threat they have as well," de Jong said.
