Kylian Mbappe backs 'world's best' Dayot Upamecano to shine for France at World Cup

France captain Kylian Mbappe has praised Dayot Upamecano ahead of Les Bleus' opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the Bayern Munich defender as one of the best centre-backs in world football.

France begin their tournament against Senegal on Tuesday, with Didier Deschamps' side once again among the favourites after winning the World Cup in 2018 and reaching the final in 2022.

While Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise has attracted plenty of attention for his attacking ability, Mbappe highlighted the importance of Upamecano, who has become a key figure for both club and country.

Speaking to French newspaper L'Equipe, the Real Madrid forward praised the defender's recent form and consistency.

"He is going through one of the best periods of his career. Dayot is currently one of the very best defenders in the world," Mbappe said.

The France captain also pointed to Upamecano's ability to maintain a high standard throughout the season, something he believes makes the defender so valuable.

"He had an excellent campaign, but more importantly, he maintained a very high level throughout and hardly experienced any drop in form," Mbappe explained.

Upamecano has played an important role for Bayern Munich and has developed into one of Deschamps' most trusted defensive options. His strength, pace and ability to defend against top attackers have made him a regular starter for France.

Mbappe also praised the defender's personality, highlighting the balance between his quiet nature and confidence on the pitch.

"I really like that mix of shyness and self-confidence. At first glance, he seems reserved, but in reality he's very sure of himself. He's a great person to have around," he said.

Les Bleus will face Senegal in their opening group match before meeting Iraq and Norway in their remaining fixtures.
