Knox Mutizwa motivated by Zimbabwe return ahead of new season

Lamontville Golden Arrows striker Knox Mutizwa insists he is highly motivated ahead of the 2023/24 following the return of Zimbabwe to international football.

Zimbabwe was banned from international football by FIFA in 2022 due to government interference.

As a result, the Warriors could not compete for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, which affected many players especially those playing in the DSTV Premiership.

Mutizwa speaking with SABC Sport ahead of the 2023/24 season at Moses Mabhida stadium says the news of their return to international football has given him extra motivation.

He now aims to do more, to not only help Golden Arrows win games but also impress the national team coach for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

"It is very motivating for me to begin the season with my country back in international football. Now I must play well and go back to the national team. It is always great to represent your own country, that is always my ambition to play for the national team,” Mutizwa explained.

"It is very good to be back, international Football is bigger than any competition. It was really hard; however, I am very happy that we are back."

Arrows did not make the top 8 last season and Knox wants to change that and lift a trophy.

"This season, I just want to score as many goals as possible. I do not have any certain number, just want to score goals and win a trophy," he said.

"It is not a mandate from the Chairlady, we talk as players, we want to do well as a family.”

Abafana Besithende begin their season against Moroka Swallows coached by Steve Komphela who is familiar to them and Mutizwa knows what to expect.

"We know coach Steve Komphela, we know him, he takes every game like a final. It will not be easy but we are ready."
