Kaizer Chiefs win the race for free agent Thabo Moloisane

Kaizer Chiefs have secured the signing of defender Thabo Moloisane as a free agent, SABC Sport has established.

The public broadcaster was first to report in July last year that the centre-back would be entering his final season at Stellenbosch FC during the 2025/26 campaign, and his exit was finally confirmed on Wednesday.

Moloisane joined Stellies almost three years ago following the relegation of Maritzburg United [now Durban City] to the Motsepe Foundation Championship and went on to become one of the club’s most reliable performers.

The hard tackling defender featured in more than 100 matches across all competitions and played a key role in the club’s recent continental progress.

His consistency and leadership at the heart of defence made him a cornerstone of the squad, and his departure is expected to be a significant blow for Stellies, now under the guidance of coach Gavin Hunt.

Chiefs moved swiftly to secure the player’s signature and are understood to have beaten Sekhukhune United in the race to sign him.

However, the Soweto giants are only expected to officially announce the deal once the new registration window opens on July 1.

Moloisane made 33 appearances in all competitions this past season, including 21 in the Betway Premiership, despite missing matches through suspension and minor injuries. One of his biggest strengths is his durability, with the defender rarely sidelined for extended periods.

The 27-year-old had also attracted attention from Hugo Broos and was on the radar for recent Bafana Bafana squads following his inclusion in World Cup qualifiers.

At Chiefs, Moloisane will compete for a place alongside Given Msimango, Inácio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley, Zitha Kwinika and Aden McCarthy in what is expected to be a highly competitive defensive unit.
