Kaizer Chiefs on Asanele Velebhayi and Luke Baartman matter

Kaizer Chiefs marketing director and board member Jessica Motaung insists they will follow due process on the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL’s) Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) case that involves Cape Town Spurs players Asavela Velebhayi and Luke Baartman.

SABC Sport reported earlier today that Spurs has taken the case involving the two players and left-back Liam Bern, who is with AmaZulu, asking them to return to the club. Velebhayi and Baartmans have signed with the Chiefs as free agents, a move that Spurs are challenging.

Motaung says they will make announcements when the time is right.

"I think what's important is that we are in the business of doing things in a way that's not gonna interfere with other clubs. We wanna follow suit and procedures and that relates to any other players that we're looking at,” Motaung said.

“So, we are taking a very professional approach in terms of integrating players into the team. We'll make sure that we only make announcements when the time is right. Watch the space but certainly we can't be engaging on players who are still with teams or are still contracted, once there are any changes we'll make the announcements.

“There's just a process and that process will be followed and once that process is done we'll make an announcement."

After Spurs were relegated to the amateur ranks, Chiefs and AmaZulu argue that the three players don’t have professional contracts and can be signed up as free agents. Motaung was also asked about the trending video of Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro in Chiefs colours, but she declined to comment.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ senior team returned from their European tour on Saturday, having played five friendly matches, winning only one and losing four.

But according to Motaung, the pre-season tour was more than just about results, and they are happy with the returns from it.

"A very, very exciting pre-season that we had I must say. First of all, a great space to be in for the team to really strategise and for the coaches and the players to really blend and connect. Very beautiful space, quiet and serene but also for the teams we played, great competition, very important that we expose our team to good flight football,” she added.

“Very excited about the work that was done, I think it was a great opportunity for the new guys to kind of integrate and also for our youth team, our youth players who came in and I think really showed that they are hungry.

“They've got that hunger in them, coming out of the development and wanting to be in the senior team. So, it was really great for the team to really integrate and engage."
