Kaizer Chiefs make enquiry over Yanga coach Nasreddine Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs are understood to have made an enquiry over possible talks with Young Africans coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Sources in both South Africa and Tanzania have informed SABC Sport that Nabi is being considered for the Glamour Boys job.

The position is not vacant, however, with Arthur Zwane still in charge of the Soweto giants, although support from the hierarchy is believed to be wavering following a disappointing first season.

Chiefs finished fifth in the DStv Premiership during the 2022/23 campaign that has just ended – an incredible 26 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns when they were expected to challenge and win silverware.

Amakhosi have not collected any major trophies since May 2015 and have had six different coaches since Stuart Baxter won the league and cup double that season, before his contract ended.

Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Baxter – in a second spell, and now Zwane all failed to end the drought.

Mangethe, who was an assistant to the previous three coaches at Chiefs, signed a three-year contract 13 months ago.

The club has been mum so far about any possible changes or plans for the upcoming season, but it is clear there is some movement behind the scenes.

Nabi recently won the league with Yanga and guided them to the finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, where they lost to USM Alger over two legs earlier this month – and there are celebrations planned this weekend in Dar es Salam.

According to more information provided to the public broadcaster, the 57-year-old Tunisian will soon be out of contract.

Yanga have not yet tied Nabi to a new deal, and the one he initially signed when he arrived in April 2021 is set to expire at the end of July.

It means should Chiefs indeed forge ahead with talks to appoint him as their next coach, Nabi can resign with immediate effect.

But as things stand, Amakhosi have simply just tested the waters, enquiring over his availability to step in and attempt to turn things around for the club.
