Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo implores club to win Nedbank Cup

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Patrick Mayo has urged Chiefs to do everything they can to win the upcoming Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates.

Amakhosi have not tasted any silverware in 10 years, and frustration is not only growing for the club's multitude of fans, but also those who've donned the famous gold and black before.

Mayo says it’s crucial for Chiefs to clinch this trophy.

"It is very important for Chiefs to win a trophy after 10 years, otherwise we'll end up being the laughing stock [of SA football] if we're not going to win this Nedbank Cup on the 10th of May", said Mayo - who also played as a striker earlier in his career.

"In terms of coach Nabi, winning the trophy will buy him more time and appease the supporters. So, it's very important for him to win it to relieve some pressure".

The 51-year-old won two league championships, among other things with the Naturena-based outfit in his heyday, and says it doesn't feel good seeing one of the country's most popular clubs struggle the way they have in the last few seasons.

"It's always very painful because whenever I meet people, they always talk about Chiefs. [Saying] No you should come back and play for Chiefs. The players there now don't deserve to wear the jersey. So it's not easy being reminded that the club you played for used to win trophies".

He went on to say that coach Nasreddine Nabi does not necessarily need to change anything, but just reinforce certain positions to add depth to his squad.

"He just needs to add to the players we already have. Some of the teams competing against us have got depth and we don't have that. If so and so is injured, we struggle a lot. I don't see any reason to make any changes", concluded Mayo.

With five games left in the Betway Premiership, Chiefs are desperate to make the top eight after missing out last term, but have a chance to end their unprecedented trophy drought when they meet sworn enemies Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on 10 May in Durban.
