Kaizer Chiefs deal blow to Orlando Pirates' title charge in Soweto Derby draw

The Buccaneers remain top of the table, but their lead over Mamelodi Sundowns stands at just two points, having played two matches more - leaving the title race finely poised.

Kickoff was delayed by 45 minutes due to crowd congestion, and the disrupted buildup fed into a scrappy opening period once the match eventually got underway.

Pirates showed early intent and thought they had taken the lead inside the opening 20 minutes when Oswin Appollis finished neatly, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

They continued to apply pressure soon after, with Relebohile Mofokeng forcing Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen into a parry from a dangerous cross, while Glody Lilepo responded at the other end with a well-struck free-kick from a tight angle that tested the Pirates defence.

The visitors were dealt a setback 10 minutes before halftime when Tshepang Moremi was forced off through injury and replaced by Patrick Maswanganyi.

Petersen proved key for Chiefs as the half progressed, producing a sharp save to deny Kamogelo Sebelebele after a scramble in the box, before the defence cleared the danger. He was called into action again just before the break, reacting quickly to thwart a close-range effort and ensure the sides went into halftime level.

Both teams made changes at the interval, with Pirates introducing Masindi Nemtajela for Makhehleni Makhaula, while Chiefs brought on Mduduzi Shabalala in place of Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

The second half began cautiously, but Chiefs broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with their first clear-cut chance. Wandile Duba drove down the flank and cut the ball back into the area for Pule Mmodi, who tapped in at the far post to give the hosts the lead.

Pirates responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Mofokeng came close with a low curling effort from outside the box, but Petersen got down well to parry the attempt away for a corner.

The equaliser arrived in the 75th minute. Deon Hottoâ™s shot was saved by Petersen, but the ball fell into the path of Kamogelo Sebelebele, who reacted quickest to slot home from close range.

Pirates applied sustained pressure in the closing stages, pinning Chiefs back in their own half, but were unable to find a winner due to a lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Chiefs held firm to secure a point, extending their unbeaten run and keeping their hopes of continential qualification, while Pirates were left to settle for a draw that could have significant implications in the title race.
