Javier Tebas steps up talks to end China row over Kylian Mbappe comments

LaLiga president Javier Tebas is holding talks with Chinese authorities in an attempt to resolve a dispute sparked by Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe's controversial comments about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV did not show any La Liga matches over the weekend, while Real Madrid's 3-0 victory over Racing Santander on Sunday was also absent from the country's pay-television coverage.

The controversy followed an interview with French programme The Bridge in which Mbappe joked about an internet meme that placed his face on an image of Mao, describing the former leader as "some guy, think he's a Chinese dictator".

The comments triggered a backlash in China, where references mocking Mao are particularly sensitive. Mbappe, Real Madrid and La Liga subsequently issued apologies.

Tebas confirmed that he had been in contact with Chinese officials and was hopeful of finding a solution.

"We've had ongoing dialogue. I'm speaking with the Chinese authorities, both in Madrid and in Beijing, and we're going to wait," he said at the World in Progress forum in Barcelona.

The La Liga chief also met Chinese ambassador to Spain Yao Jing last week and pointed to the strong relationship between Spanish football and China as a reason for optimism.

"We'll try everything possible to normalise the situation as much as we can," Tebas added, confirming that he intended to continue travelling and holding discussions with Chinese officials.

La Liga has developed close relationships with Chinese sporting and political authorities over several years, including an agreement with China Media Group, the parent organisation of CCTV.

Tebas acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but remained hopeful that the dispute would be resolved. Mbappe, meanwhile, scored in Real Madrid's victory over Racing, which moved them to within three points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.
