It's all about priorities for AmaTuks and Cape Town Spurs

The Nedbank Cup has always been a tricky tournament for teams that are vying for promotion or trying to avoid relegation and tonight’s meeting between the University of Pretoria and Cape Town Spurs, falls into that category.

AmaTuks are currently log leaders in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, only a point clear at the top with 11 games - as they target direct promotion to the Premier Division.

They play a bottom-of-the-log team in the elite league in Spurs.

This tournament has a history of distracting teams, but AmaTuks head coach Tlisane Motaung says they’ve got a plan.

"The decision we took from our planning as a team, we felt that we need to increase the pool of players. So that we manage exactly what you are talking about because that season when we went to playoffs our squad was a little bit thin and we had to double up certain individuals,” Motaung said.

“But around this time we felt we need to compete. We have to respect the game at the end of the day. Supporters expect us to be professional, everyone expects us to be professional and our role now is to make sure that we manage both competitions, they are important for us."

In previous seasons, AmaTuks have been in similar situations, like in 2009 when they went all the way to the final where they lost to Moroka Swallows, however, they still failed to get a promotion in that season.

Motaung also found himself in a similar situation in 2019 and says they learned from that.

"That season we went all the way to quarterfinals and we did not also win the league. So, there was not much of a justification from that point. So, for us I thought the plan of us increasing the pool of players is the one that we're banking on, hoping that it will yield results at the end of the day."
