Durban City star eager for continental challenge

Durban City striker Letsie Koapeng says the club is excited about the prospect of competing in the CAF Confederation Cup next season following their historic Nedbank Cup triumph.

The Citizens secured qualification for the continental competition after edging TS Galaxy 1-0 in last weekend’s final at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Koapeng, one of the senior figures in the squad, believes the opportunity on the continent will be especially meaningful for players nearing the latter stages of their careers before retirement.

"I think we can take it all the way. I think we shouldn't be naive and get ahead of ourselves. However, we do have a group of good individuals, we are led by good senior players and a good technical team," said Koapeng

"The chairman as well – I can't say enough about him. With that being said. I do see the club moving forward. Many of us are probably in the twilight years of our careers, and ja, we can only do our best with the time that we have to contribute going forward."

The 34-year-old veteran says he has found it seamless to blend in since arriving at City at the start of the season.

"We have a good group of senior players – experience.  But I can't say that without mentioning or touching on the younger players. I think they are very humble younger boys that are looking to learn; there are no big heads. Even when people do step out  – I mean we are all human beings – they quickly bring themselves back. It's just a well-put together team, very well balanced, and that makes it very easy for the experienced players to just add on to what we've found here."

Koapeng has also seen the growth of KZN football, a region with the highest number of teams in the PSL topflight, giving him confidence there’s more to come following the Nedbank Cup triumph.

On his personal achievement – a first trophy in his career – Koapeng admits it’s better late than never as the old adage goes.
