If you can save four penalties, it's not luck - Hugo Broos on Ronwen Williams

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has praised goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams for leading by example on Bafana's glorious victory against Cape Verde Saturday night.

The South African senior men's team beat Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties to reach their first ever AFCON semifinal in 24 years.

It was for the second time that Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos won an AFCON quarterfinal on penalties.

On his way to lifting his maiden continental title in African football with Cameroon in 2017, the Belgian-born coach beat Senegal on penalties.

Broos credits Williams for his hard work.

"Yes, you can be happy that players want to give a penalty and we were not lucky, because we had a very good keeper today, if you can take four penalties, this is not luck anymore. You can take one but four, this is not luck. Not only that, he saved us two minutes before the end also with the player who was alone in front of him. So, yes, he was the Man of the Match. I think you could choose nobody else because he's really the Man of the Match," Broos said.

Bafana Bafana will now play Nigeria in the first semifinal in Bouaké on Wednesday afternoon, after a tightly contested last eight match with some scary moments for Bafana, Broos was happy to see his team going through to the semifinals.

"Let's say six hours ago, I was 71, now I'm 75. It was a very stressful game, certainly with penalties, you never know what will happen when you have to take penalties. It's a very special situation for the players. So, sometimes you do a little game after training taking penalties and nearly no player misses a penalty but you see today what happened, not only with us but also players of Cape Verde."
