Olwethu Makhanya hopeful Mosimane gives him what Broos didn’t

The 22-year-old completed his move to Europe following his reported R87-million transfer from MLS side Philadelphia Union to Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, where he has made an encouraging start.

Broos was a vocal critic of the American league but eventually included Makhanya in his FIFA World Cup squad in June, although the centre-back did not feature during the tournament.

Makhanya now hopes his prospects will improve under new Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, with the defender eager to establish himself in the national team.

"I saw the coaching change as an opportunity for a fresh start in the national team because I always felt like I was overlooked by the previous coach."

Makhanya, who pushed for the Rangers move when Union were reluctant to sell, admits being based in Europe boosts his Bafana chances.

The former Stellenbosch FC player added that he never understood where the criticism of the MLS emerged from. 

"I never understood the criticism because all these people probably never actually watched the MLS. People that really watch that league will tell you that it's high level football.

"Honestly if I were to rank them, I'll put the Scottish Premiership first, second is the MLS, and the Betway Premiership is third."
