Hugo Broos revisits his Maradona moment on the eve of the World Cup draw

Ahead of tonight’s highly anticipated FIFA 2026 World Cup draw, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has recalled one of his most important days in football, the day he marked the great Diego Maradona at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Broos was 34 in that World Cup, when he played for the Belgian national team, and they faced Argentina, the eventual champions, in the semifinal.

As he looks ahead to the World Cup with Bafana tonight, Broos looks back at his glorious moment in football...

"In that semifinal we played against two opponents, we had the Argentinian team and then we had Maradona. We lost that semifinal, and I can even say that we lost against Maradona that day. He was fantastic."

Broos, who will be retiring from coaching at the end of next year’s World Cup, is in Washington in the US, as part of the South African delegation for tonight’s draw.

Broos, a former central defender, says just like Messi and Ronaldo, marking a football superstar like Maradona is not an easy job.

"You know, those kind of players you can't mark. they will do what they want because they are so good . You just have to try your best to stop them, but more often than not, it ends very badly for you."

Depending on the draw tonight,  Broos and Bafana could end up in Mexico again after the official draw proceedings.
